The UN Resident Coordinator Office

The Resident Coordinator’s Office supports the work of the UN Resident Coordinator and coordinates activities of the UN Country Team in its engagement with the Government as defined by the UN Development Cooperation Strategy (UNDCS).

Türkiye is currently implementing United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2021 - 2025, which is the medium-term results framework that describes the response of the UN system to national development priorities. UNSDCF describes how the UN country team will contribute to the achievement of development results based on a common country analysis and the UN comparative advantage.

The Resident Coordinator is leading and strategically positioning the United Nations country team in Türkiye to respond to the current national priorities.  The Office has five core functions:

  • Strategic Planning
  • Economics
  • Partnerships and development finance
  • Data and results management and reporting
  • Communications and advocacy

The UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator in Türkiye

On 10 December 2021, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Alvaro Rodriguez of Canada as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Türkiye, with the host Government’s approval.

Following the issuance of the UN Flash Appeal for Türkiye in response to the twin earthquakes that affected 11 southern provinces on 6 February 2023, Rodriguez is also appointed as the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Türkiye for a period of 3 months.

Mr. Rodriguez brings more than 30 years of international development experience, which he has acquired at the United Nations and externally, to the position. Within the Organization, he most recently served as Officer-in-Charge of the United Nations in Türkiye after serving as United Nations Resident Coordinator in Tanzania. He also held managerial positions at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), including in New York with the Bureau for Development Policy, as well as in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Somalia. Earlier in his United Nations career Mr. Rodriguez worked in China, Kenya, and Thailand.

Prior to joining the United Nations, he completed his military service in Canada and worked as a consultant with the Ottawa-based International Development Research Centre, as well as with the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.

Mr. Rodriguez holds a master’s degree in international affairs from Carleton University and a master’s degree in political science from the University of British Columbia, both in Canada. He also undertook doctorate level coursework at the Australian National University.
