Guterres: “Volunteers embody the best of humanity”
On the occasion of International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres celebrated the transformative power of volunteerism, emphasizing the profound impact volunteers have on communities and the world at large.
“The task of building a better world belongs to all people,” the Secretary-General stated, underlining the essential role volunteers play in creating a healthier, more peaceful, and humane society.
Highlighting the courage and selflessness of volunteers, Guterres noted their crucial contributions across a wide array of challenges, including responding to natural disasters, supporting communities in conflict, and alleviating poverty. “Even the smallest acts have the power to change lives,” he said, reminding the global community of the ripple effects of volunteerism.
The Secretary-General paid tribute to the work of United Nations Volunteers, who, he said, “advance peace, justice, and equality in 169 countries across the globe.” He further connected their efforts to the Pact for the Future, adopted in September, calling it a guiding framework “grounded in trust and cooperation.” Guterres emphasized that this spirit of solidarity is central to the Pact and serves as a foundation for global progress.
“Volunteers embody the best of humanity,” the Secretary-General said, urging individuals everywhere to draw inspiration from their example and commit to shaping a better world for all.
On this important day, the UN reiterates its call for collective action and recognizes the indispensable contributions of volunteers in driving sustainable development and social cohesion.
