“Eye-catching” food waste

A photography exhibition depicting food waste opens in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Ankara.

27 September 2022, Ankara – In support of the national “Save Your Food” campaign against food loss and waste in Türkiye, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Türkiye, with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Ankara, are jointly organizing the exhibition “Grown for a Bin” by the Austrian photographer Klaus Pichler.

The exhibition shows unconsumed food in various stages of decay arranged into an elaborate series of still-life photographs. The provocative way that food waste is depicted seeks to draw public attention to the issue and bring about a necessary shift in the mindset and behavior of consumers.

The photography exhibition “Grown for a Bin” opens on 29 September Thursday at 14:00 hrs. with the joint press statement, which will be delivered by Mr. Viorel Gutu, FAO Representative in Türkiye, and Subregional Coordinator for Central Asia, Mr. Radosław Sadowski, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Ankara and Mr. Ahmet Volkan Güngören, Deputy Director General for EU and Foreign Affairs, Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

The exhibition, which opens on September 29, the International Day of Food Loss and Waste Awareness, will be displayed on the exterior walls of the Embassy of Poland throughout October.

About the “Save Your Food” campaign:

Launched in May 2020, the national Save Your Food campaign is intended to raise awareness about the detrimental impacts of food loss and waste and to stimulate action along the food supply chain. The campaign is jointly implemented by FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Türkiye under the project “Reduction of Food Loss and Waste in Türkiye, Azerbaijan and Central Asia.” It is funded by Türkiye through the FAO-Türkiye Partnership Programme on Food and Agriculture. The project assists recipient countries (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Türkiye, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan) in developing national strategies and action plans for reducing food loss and waste (http://gidanikoru.com).

About 29 September International Day of Food Loss and Waste:

In 2019, the UN General Assembly, accepting the crucial role of sustainable food production on food safety and nutrition, designated 29 September as the “International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.” The day aims to reduce food waste per person, reduce food loss during production and supply chain and raise awareness on the subject.

About Klaus Pichler:

Klaus Pichler lives and works in Vienna. He studied landscape planning and landscape architecture at the University of Life Sciences Vienna and has worked as a freelance photographer since 2005 with a focus on commissioned work and free artistic projects. His primary focus is in the overlooked aspects of everyday life, the relationship between people and the environment, and the tension between natural science, social policy, and media culture.
