“United Nations is an idea, a promise—to generations past, present, and future—that no problem is too big when we face it together” said United Nations Resident Coordinator in Türkiye, Babatunde Ahonsi, addressing a packed auditorium of young delegates at the launch of Hacettepe University’s Model United Nations Conference HUMUN’25.
More than 500 students from over 50 high schools and universities gathered at Hacettepe University for the launch of HUMUN’25 on May 13, the university’s second Model United Nations conference. Held during a milestone year—the 80th anniversary of the United Nations—the conference offers a timely opportunity for young delegates to reimagine multilateralism and shape bold solutions for a world in flux.
Speaking at the opening session United Nations Resident Coordinator in Türkiye, Babatunde Ahonsi, reminded participants that the values behind the UN—peace, dignity, and equality—were forged from the ashes of global conflict and must now be upheld in the face of today’s crises
“You are here because you believe in dialogue over division, in negotiation over conflict, and in cooperation over isolation,” Ahonsi told the young delegates. “Although that belief is being challenged, it is more relevant than ever. Let this be the beginning of your journey as global citizens—bold, compassionate, and determined” he added.
Ahonsi, emphasized the active role of youth in shaping the world, stating, “You are not simply the leaders of tomorrow—you are the leaders of today. Across communities, movements, start-ups, and digital platforms, young people are already leading on climate action, defending human rights, and pushing boundaries in science and innovation.”
The Resident Coordinator highlighted the UN’s tireless work across the globe—from humanitarian aid and peacekeeping to climate action and women’s empowerment—and reminded the audience that real change begins with people. “The United Nations was never meant to be just a building in New York. It is an idea, a promise—that no problem is too big when we face it together.”
The event also featured opening remarks from Prof. Şahap Armağan Tarım, Vice President of Hacettepe University, who emphasized that HUMUN is not only a simulation but a real-world exercise in diplomacy and leadership. “Here at Hacettepe, we gather not only to simulate diplomacy but to practice the very principles the UN has been championing for 80 years: collaboration, compromise, and the relentless pursuit of meaningful solutions,” he said.
Organized by the Hacettepe University Model United Nations Society HUMUN’25 brings together a diverse and talented group of delegates. With committees tailored to all levels of experience and an emphasis on both academic and logistical excellence, the conference aims to leave a lasting impact on all who attend.
