UN Türkiye is “Together for Implementation” of climate action

The United Nations Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in Türkiye was represented at the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh by Ms. Eser Pirgan Matur, RCO Economist.

Speaking at the COP27 Turkish pavilion side event on “Dimensions of Climate Action, Pirgan Matur, congratulated Türkiye’s recent efforts to raise climate ambition. She mentioned that UN Country Team in Türkiye is also responding to this positive development by raising the bar in climate action.

UN agencies in Türkiye, which are traditional partners in climate action, are making an effort to expand their portfolios. These agencies include UNDP, UNIDO, FAO, IFAD and UNEP.

Moreover many other UN agencies which are not traditional partners for climate action are also entering the discussion and supporting the efforts by providing analytical work, supporting policy debates and by supporting youth engagement. IOM, UN Women, ILO, UNICEF and WHO are among these agencies.

RCO Economist for Türkiye also emphasized that there is need to focus on critical interventions for the future of humanity and the planet and use these interventions as a leverage for the achievement of other SDGs all together. She added that climate action and just, green transition lies at the heart of this approach offering positive, transformative change.

Türkiye ratified the Paris Agreement in late 2021 and convened its first Climate Council in February 2022. The council brought together the state and non-state actors across the country on a common agenda for a national climate action. UN Türkiye worked with the young Climate Envoys of Türkiye before and during the Climate Council and participated in the technical Committees of the Council to share its perspective in this very important policy formulation process.

As announced to Türkiye’s partners by the Deputy Prime Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change at COP27, Türkiye will be announcing its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) at COP27 on 15 November.
